Time is passing incredibly fast!! Chinese New Year is here in just 3 more days! Are you guys all prepared yet? Most of my friends are in midst of tidying up their home, and getting new clothes in preparation for Chinese New Year. And here I am, still busy with school work, and with my room in a terrible mess, hahahahaha.
The Chinese traditionally hold to the belief that we should always clean up our house before we welcome the New Year. So that we can remove the old, and welcome the new. The whole house is then adorned with all those pretty New Year decorations, making the house as vibrant as possible in order to welcome the God of Wealth!
The custom is not just based on senseless belief though. Who wants to visit a house that’s down and out? Even the “Caishen” or Chinese God of Wealth has taste ok! (Hahahhahahaa)
Also, it is quite embarrassing when people visit and then your room is in a terrible mess. Which is why, a few days before Chinese New Year, everyone gets extremely busy with prepping the house to welcome the New Year!
Being an amazing host is part of bringing in good luck too. Not only do we clean the house, we will also prepare the house with plenty of snacks and food. Not forgetting the most crucial dinner of all, the reunion dinner on Chinese New Year’s Eve!
Fish is one of the main dish for Chinese New Year, citing “年年有余 (Nian nian you yu)”, meaning “Abundance through the year“. Followed by dumplings, that resembles the ingot. Both dishes represents prosperity. So it is a must-have for reunion dinner!
Over at Foodnetwork.com you can learn plenty of dish to get you ready for the reunion dinner!
Then my ahma will prepare her signature “Ngoh-hiong”. It’s so good, all the kids love it!
And the biggest event of the night is always the “loh-hei”. Family will gather together on the table and fish for good luck through the dish while saying New Year idioms that fits their resolution for the year!
Meanwhile, when everyone is busy in the kitchen, keep the kids occupied with a series of movies and show from Hulu.
Otherwise, you can always download some games for them to play on your ViewQwest TV! The only hassle is that, you got to click instead of tapping hahaha.
Help the kids put down their gadgets this Year of the Monkey!
After dinner, the whole family can sit down to a good old fashioned Chinese comedy from PPTV:
